Out and About

Out and About programs at William Rose School provide meaningful, hands-on opportunities for our students to practice their skills in real-life settings. Our teachers develop their community access programs based on the specific needs of students focusing on recreation, leisure and fitness, work experience, various key learning areas and functional life skills development.

Out and About programs assist students to practice many skills including;

  • Socialisation
  • Problem solving
  • Handling money, shopping
  • Making choices
  • Communicating for a range of purposes
  • Orientation and mobility, road safety, travelling safely in the community, stranger danger
  • Organising outings, booking venues, accessing information
  • Enjoying sports, leisure activities, arts, the environment
  • Developing leadership qualities, taking initiative
  • Workplace learning
  • Positive behaviour
  • Using community facilities such as libraries, banks, restaurants, post offices
  • Teachers regularly assess students' skills in the community, to ensure learning is transferred to and occurring in real life settings.

Most importantly, out and about programs focus on the development of student competencies required in adult life and also ties in closely with transition programs, to foster the skills needed for life after school.
