Numeracy
Skills in numeracy and other areas of mathematics are important for all students. We have created a dynamic and rich learning environment for the development of skills.
Students are assessed in numeracy through SWANs, Best Start, which is then matched against the Numeracy Framework – requiring appropriate adjustments for students with disability or additional learning and support needs to help them participate on the same basis as their peers. These are determined through the collaborative planning processes.
We have also designed a Financial Literacy Assessment Tool (FLAT) that is beneficial in assessing how our students are achieving their functional financial literacy skills. See Assessment Tools.
Students are provided with ongoing numeracy and maths skills in a range of settings to develop functional numeracy skills. For example, community access programs reinforce financial literacy skills in real life situations; food preparation programs reinforce skills in measurement and fractions; visual arts programs reinforce concepts such as colour, shape and size and physical education programs reinforce concepts such as position and time.
A range of adjustments and accommodations are made to provide access to the maths curriculum for our students. Please go to K-10 Resources and 11-12 Resources for further ideas. Please also refer to the iPad Applications section for App ideas that are highly motivating and engaging.
