Literacy
William Rose School offers many literacy activities and programs that are tailored to the individual needs of each student. We have created a dynamic and rich learning environment for the development of skills using a variety of assessment tools – the SWANs (Students with Additional Needs) assessment developed by University of Melbourne is based on teachers’ judgement and observations of their students in their learning. The tool covers 5 learning skills; Communication, Interpersonal Learning, Literacy, Personal Learning and Emotional Understanding and aims to assess and report the learning progress of students who have additional needs.
The focus of our literacy programs is functionality.
-
What does the student need to know in order to participate in life outside of school?
-
What skills does the student need in order to develop independence?
-
How does the student communicate with others and how can this be improved?
-
How can challenging behaviours be channelled into more positive expressions of communication?
-
How can the student foster friendships and connect with others?
-
How can the student make and express choices?
-
What technologies are appropriate to enhance communication independence?
-
How can students practise their literacy skills in a range of settings?
-
What motivates individual students in literacy?
This type of reflection assists in formulating quality teaching and learning programs in literacy that are meaningful.
